The Arkansas Department of Education is allowing school districts to apply for an Inclement Weather Calendar Waiver to allow school districts to make up missed school days due to inclement weather and move from a traditional calendar that meets the state minimum 178 school days to the alternate calendar that requires a minimum of 1068 instructional hours. The Piggott School District currently has 372 instructional minutes per day which is 12 minutes more than the minimum of 360 minutes per day. With the 372 instructional minutes per day, the Piggott School District will accumulate a total of 66,216 minutes this year or 1,103.6 hours that is 35.6 hours above state minimum. This gives the district a total of 5.74 days built in to use to make up for inclement weather. Tonight, the school board approved the waiver request and the change to move over to an alternate calendar for the remainder of the school year. This will allow the school district to use two of those days to replace the two we missed in January. Therefore the school district will observe Monday, February 19, 2024 as President's day and students and staff will be out of school. Also, Friday, March 15, 2024 will again be a day given back to the students and staff and there will be no school the Friday before Spring Break.

Mohawk Nation: Regarding the survey request. We would be requesting the early start waiver in order to be able to end the school year prior to Memorial Day 2025. If granted the waiver, we could start anytime the week of August 12.

Mohawk Nation: The Piggott Elementary School had a water leak over the weekend and the Kindergarten and 1st grade hallways were most affected. We have extracted the water and now have a demolition crew on site to finish up drying out the walls and cabinet areas to ensure we do not have mold or mildew growing in those areas. The admin team and staff have developed a plan to move those affected classrooms to other parts of the building and continue to educate your students the best we possibly can during this time. We are going to move as quickly as possible to get those areas sanitized and put back together. The Piggott School District will keep you posted on these developments. Our main goal is to provide a safe, secure place for your students and our Mohawks to get a quality education. Thank you for your support during this time. #GoMohawks!
